.…Doc thinks back to the war, when Ronan McKenna, annoyed by the constant bickering of Monk and Ham, challenged them to a fight and quickly beat them with a few deft moves….
As Sergei plays host to his prisoners, the sound of jets passing overhead distracts everyone; Doc identifies the jets as American, there to deliver a warning….
….Doc complimented McKenna on his swiftness, but Monk mentioned how no one has ever landed a punch on Doc. McKenna tried but Doc dodged without seeming even to move. Several more passes and Doc stood still allowing McKenna to hit him in the chest. McKenna’s hand was injured; he felt like he hit solid granite….
In the village, Doc’s aides question their captors about the giant rod which appears to be an energy source. The guards demonstrate a working knowledge of the identities of Doc’s team. They also tell Johnny that as an archaeologist he "will help discover the reason why when we are gone." Elsewhere, Sergei explains to Doc how the river of oil, unearthed by the war, will be the salvation of their land but they need Doc’s wisdom to make the best us of it. A tank hen crashes through the wall and US troops engage Sergei’s forces in a firefight. Sergei is killed by a stray bullet; his female associate Arina is resigned to her fate after so many years of war but is told by a bodyguard to help Doc and company escape. They board a nearby train and head off, fighting off attackers as they go. Doc knocks Arina unconscious…and she wakes up to find that the train carrying Doc, Long Tom, and Wei has gone off the edge of a cliff into the sea. As she watches, Doc's submarine surfaces….
