Comic Book Synopsis / Plot
Written by
Peter Silvestro
In the Middle Eastern city choked by the smoke from a burning river,
Doc Savage
has encountered
The Two who are One
. Questioned by their aide
Da’ud
, Doc says merely that he is looking for a friend and makes no mention of the nuclear threat. The prescient Two tell Doc that he will find the one he seeks but he must go through the fire to reach that goal. Doc allows Da’ud to choose which of his aides will accompany him; the warrior picks
Long Tom
, and Doc offers to have Da’ud’s diminutive sidekick
Wei
come along as observer to prove his good faith. Sent to find a vehicle for Doc, Long Tom settles on a former amphibious troop transport (now used as a public bath) and paralyzes the brutish owner when he balks at giving it up. Doc trades his gyrocopter for it and the trio sets off across the desert. At their destination, a nearby city, the tank is captured and hauled into the air. Doc cuts an escape hole in the floor but the enemy fires on him until they can launch gas into the tank. As Doc, Long Tom, and Wei are being bound, gagged, and placed in wheelchairs for transport to a mysterious destination, a receiver planted in Doc’s ear brings him a message from
Ronan MacKenna
, warning him that his mission is hopeless, this world is ending, and Doc can only watch these people die again. Doc and company are wheeled into a grand banquet hall, where a man introduces himself as
Sergei
, the mayor of this place, and most of the diners are skeletons. "This is all for you." Sergei announces….

Synopsis:
By Peter Silvestro
A series of brutal but non-fatal attacks on gangsters sweeps the city; the imprisoned
Smitty
realizes it is
Benson
, the
Avenger
, working out his scheme of revenge. Smitty’s nemesis
Danny Bones
is called on the carpet by the big boss,
Shonder Zeev
, who has noticed that all the victims are connected to Bones. Under pressure, Bones reveals that the Avenger has a vendetta against him for framing Smitty. As a result, Ze'ev has Bones cut off from the organization: he is denied entrance to clubs, mob hangouts, even his own apartment; other gang members refuse to talk to him or be seen with him. He no longer has police connections, so Smitty is released from custody. Leaving the jail, Smitty is met by Benson, who gives him permission to pursue the case his own way. "You should only kill if it’s necessary, not because you get off on it…that’s the difference between murder and vengeance." Smitty goes home, meditating on Benson’s test…noting that he always failed tests, as he prepares his gun….

Comments: We learn Doc Savage carries a supply of extra shirts with him. Benson and Smitty are the only Justice, Inc. members to appear in this issue.

Reviews
By Peter Silvestro
More of the same: uneven art, a murky story (though the dismal setting is a novelty), and Doc on a quest to rescue a guy we’ve never heard of, undercutting the urgency and emotional involvement of the mission in the Doc story and a grim Justice Inc. installment which is easier to follow but more emotionally intense. A dark, dark issue.
