Comic Book Synopsis / Plot
Written by
Peter Silvestro
Their gyros shot down,
Doc Savage
and his men are confronted by Iraqi militia in a tense moment. When the leader orders the killing of one of Doc’s men, the aides start bashing heads and hold three enemies prisoner. Doc proposes they talk instead but the hostages are ordered to set off their bombs so Doc is forced to release them. They order Doc and his men to surrender but are interrupted by mortar fire. When the shelling stops, the
Man of Bronze
has his aides board a truck—then he hurries off and hijacks a military vehicle and drives off. The enemy gives chase but Doc makes his true purpose clear: trying the steering wheel in position, he uses the mounted gun to shoot the next wave of mortar shells out of the air. When they are all safe, Doc surrenders, boarding the truck with his men. On the journey, they discuss
Ronan McKenna
, the old friend whose apparent survival has brought them there: an outstanding military tactician and fighter, he was supposedly killed in the bombing of the aircraft carrier he was stationed on during the war five years earlier. Reaching their destination, they emerge from the closed truck to be puzzled by the dark sky at noon. Doc overpowers a guard and rushes off through the village to find a solution to the mystery. Eluding solider he suddenly comes upon a burning river of oil, the smoke of which is obscuring the sky. A voice causes him to turn and he finds himself face to face with

Synopsis:
By Peter Silvestro
On his mission of vengeance,
Smitty
keeps surveillance on mobster
Danny Bones
and recognizes him as a stone cold killer by the look in his eyes—the same one he sees in the mirror each day. He is waiting for the right moment to execute bones for the rape and murder of
Victor Santoro
’s wife. He follows his quarry everywhere but does not know he has been spotted by Bones—and identified as an employee of the
Avenger
. Later that night at a nightclub, Bones goes outside without his bodyguards for a change. Smitty suspects a trap but can’t afford to pass up the opportunity. He is seized in the alley by two cops in the pay of the
Syndicate
, who fire Smitty’s gun into a doorway to frame him for the attempted murder of Danny Bones.
Richard Benson
, the Avenger, visits Smitty in jail and forces him to admit he was planning to kill Bones—a direct violation of
Justice, Inc.
policy. Benson leaves without bailing Smitty out, but the operative knows from his grim expression that the Avenger is now on the case….

Reviews
By Peter Silvestro
An all-action issue that doesn’t advance the plot very much, this story features some hints of a conspiracy (c’mon,
Ronan McKenna
’s the bad guy…right?) and a bit of confusing adventure (took me a while to realize that was mortar fire that hit the village).
Doc
is pure hero in this one, rescuing the enemy from mortar fire and providing solid leadership in a crisis thought the art is uneven making look like a big clod in some panels (
Renny
, not
Monk
, looks like an ape on page one). And what is there to say about
Justice, Inc.
? It continues with its grim noir reinvention of the pulp hero, at odds with the
Doc Savage
half of the book. Again, the plot doesn’t advance much but the tale is compelling.
