Comic Book Synopsis / Plot

Written by Peter Silvestro

Captain Cheng of the Blackhawks is battling the metal giant Ferrios on a hill overlooking Neopolis; meanwhile, Doc Savage and The Bat-Man are fleeing the village of the Red Right Hand. Reaching a cliff, Bat-Man takes to the air as the Man of Bronze dives into the water….

At the home of the murdered Reeses, Renny and The Spirit have come face-to-face with an enraged Rima and her panther. When they spot a computer disc hanging about her neck, Reese, who is not yet dead, tells them it belongs to Johnny Littlejohn—then an arrow pierces his neck. Warriors of the Red Right Hand invade the room; in the melee The Spirit snatches the disc and he tosses it to Renny. The Spirit and Rima hold off the enemy while Renny escapes in the autogiro….

In the city, Monk and Ham with the Avenger have traced the stolen gold to a medical facility. The Avenger waylays an orderly in a nearby alley and adopts the man’s face and identity….

Bat-Man soars over Neopolis on batwings, dropping bombs to provide a distraction for Doc Savage to enter the city through an underwater grate. Then, to cover himself, Bat-Man fights his way through the guards, claiming he is looking for Bruce Wayne….

As Anton Colossi heads back to the city with the captive Cheng, Rima, and The Spirit, the Avenger, in his disguise as an orderly, observes what is going on in the medical lab. John Sunlight is overseeing the tests of irradiated gold on human guinea pigs, taken from among the city’s homeless population. He and another aide are tasked with disposing of the corpse of the latest failed test subject in an acid pit. Benson pushes the other orderly in for good measure and radios Ham and Monk that he is letting them in….

Meanwhile, Doc Savage has entered near the communications center and fights his way into the complex. Colossi finds Bruce Wayne in his room and warns him of the danger; he then shows Bruce to the command center of the city. In the room is a pit where The Spirit, Rima, and Cheng are imprisoned; Colossi tosses the captured Johnny in for good measure. John Sunlight contacts Colossi and is introduced to Bruce Wayne; instinctively he can tell that Wayne is not to be trusted. As this is going on, the Avenger, Monk, and Ham burst into the room Sunlight is occupying but they are easily captured by the villain’s men. Colossi shows Bruce what he would have been part of had he chosen to join the Golden Tree (and which memory will be removed by lobotomy later): the press of a button causes a massive tidal wave to engulf a small island. He then releases a giant lizard into the prisoner pit. Doc Savage is spotted approaching the command center; Sunlight reveals to him the he, the villain, poisoned Doc’s father and directs Doc to a room at the end of the hall…Bruce Wayne is returned to his room where he dons the costume of the Bat-Man…the rest of the Blackhawks arrive…as does Renny in the autogiro…as Doc Savage arrives in the room holding his father’s coffin, he is suddenly seized by the robot Ferrios….

Hard to believe there’s only one issue left: it still looks like the story has barely gotten started. At least we now have all the heroes in the same place at the same time (though many of them have nothing interesting to do) and an idea of the villains’ schemes (Anton Colossi wants to threaten the world with a superweapon/John Sunlight wants the secret of immortality) but the creators really have their work cut out for them to wrap this up next issue.
