The eruption of volcano
Ethel’s Mama devastates
Fan Coral Island in the Pacific, and results in some odd phenomena which come to the attention of the world…and
Doc Savage. Studying the effects of the blast, Doc deduces the existence of an incredible threat to humanity, which he code-names “
Repel.” He and his team head to the island, as do a villain called
Stage Chinkins who is impersonating a journalist he has murdered, and diminutive criminal mastermind
Cadwiller Olden. Doc and his men investigate the strange happenings on the island;
Monk is questioned at gunpoint by a native until the man is knocked out by Doc. An odd force then arises, sending Doc and his crew flying through the air.
Long Tom is lured away and captured by a beautiful woman with a tale of a fantastic monster she’s sighted. She then tells the same tale to Doc and company, adding that she saw the thing drag off Long Tom. They find the native who questioned Monk dead, crushed by a falling boulder, and discover that he was a crook named
Bert the Blood in disguise, partner to Stage Chinkins. Chinkins, now working solo, throws in his lot with Cadwiller Olden. The young woman,
Alberta Mantle, claiming to be a science writer, joins Doc and his party as they prepare to dive to find the thing which came out of the volcano. Doc and
Renny head underwater and are suddenly caught by a powerful force and blown out of the water high into the air….
[In part two, Repel would be revealed as a substance that can negate gravity. Cadwiller Olden seizes it for criminal purposes until Doc puts paid to his schemes, sending Olden’s yacht to the bottom of the sea—though the original novel leaves Olden’s fate uncertain, possibly for a comeback which never materialized.]
