Comic Book Synopsis / Plot

Written by Peter Silvestro

Cheng of the Blackhawks delivers the casket containing the body of Clark Savage Sr. to Anton Colossi in Hidalgo. While at the airport, Bruce Wayne arrives, playing the role of the shallow playboy invited to invest in Colossi’s scheme to build the floating city of Neolantis as a step toward establishing world peace. Cheng radios Janos Prohaska to tell him how they broke Doc Savage out of prison the previous evening and flew him to Hidalgo, where he leaped from the plane in a glider suit. Doc’s plan was to discover the real intentions of the Golden Tree, Colossi’s sinister organization. The Man of Bronze dropped into the camp of the Red Right Hand, the sect of assassins who stole his father’s body from its grave in New York. Doc battled the warriors but was felled by their darts containing stingray venom….

In New York, the Avenger returns with Monk and Ham to Doc Savage’s headquarters where they find a wounded Long Tom in the street outside, muttering about gold and gangsters. Immediately they are fired upon and Monk rushes straight into the gunfire….

Doc Savage awakens, ties to a huge wooden cross…

Elsewhere the Golden Tree’s resident physician Dr. Chatte is attempting to pry the secrets from Johnny Littlejohn’s head to recover the codes Johnny used to sabotage their computers. That night, Bruce dons his Bat-Man costume and overhears a report to Colossi that Doc Savage is a prisoner of the Red Right Hand. Since the tribesmen are planning to sacrifice him to the ruler, Colossi, the villain makes plans to be there for the spectacle….

Renny and The Spirit, searching for Johnny, come to the home of the Reeses, who gave the injured man refuge; the elderly couple has been gruesomely slain. They turn to see Rima the Jungle Girl and her deadly black panther….

Cheng stands on a hill overlooking Neolantis—and discovers he is being stalked by Ferrios, the giant mechanical man….

The Red Right Hand surround Doc Savage, bound atop their temple. The Bat-Man swoops down, driving off the warriors and lands atop the wooden cross. "Doctor Savage, I presume?"

Comments: First appearance of Janos Prohaska (as a voice on the radio), the first of the original Blackhawks to be mentioned (Chop Chop, mentioned by Prohaska, is also one of the original characters).

Review: The series seems to have hit its stride: now it’s clear what this is about, there is a unified storyline, all the characters have a role to play in the proceedings, and it’s starting to make sense. Now if they could only bring these things out on schedule….
