| Pro Review: | By Peter Silvestro This issue’s release was delayed about six weeks due to unforeseen problems (at least I hope DC didn’t foresee them); so, was it worth the wait? Answer: I don’t know yet. We’re still being introduced to the cast of characters so the plot hasn’t advanced to the point where we yet have a clue as to what is going on. A domed city? Hidalgo’s gold? Doc’s father resurrected? These don’t yet add up. The most notable event in this issue is not one you would think of: first appearance of Bat-Man? Nope. He’s barely in it and we already saw him in the BATMAN/DOC SAVAGE prelude. The Avenger? Nope, he was in DOC SAVAGE #1. The new Blackhawks in action after their teaser intro last ish? Nah, they’re just another team of tough heroes and not all that distinctive yet. What I’m talking about is the new, revised Ebony White. See, the old Ebony was always The Spirit’s biggest albatross: though Will Eisner always sought to make him a well-rounded, intelligent sidekick to the hero, comic book conventions of the time dictated he look and sound like a racist stereotype. No matter how positively the character was portrayed, his looks worked against him, so he has been omitted from every adaptation of The Spirit since the 1960s. It is to the credit of the current creators that they found a way to bring back this marvelous character—by reinventing her as a young attractive black woman. It is even more to their credit that they avoided portraying her as a sassy ghetto hipster, turning her into a more modern black stereotype. So here’s hoping we see more of Ebony and they can pull the various threads of the plot together to give us an idea of what this story is about.
